Athena Andreadis
6 January 2006On New Year’s Eve we shared our cultural highlights of 2005 with some of our friends and neighbours. My pick of the year was a performance at the Womad Festival last July by a young London-based Greek singer called Athena Andreadis. Performing in the tiny Radio 3 World On Your Street tent in front a small but enthusiastic crowd sheltering from the rain, she was wonderful – a beautiful, haunting voice and her version of Mongolian throat singing was the most magical thing I heard last year. You can still hear the Radio 3 recording of her Womad performance at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/womad2005/woys_andreadis.shtml Her first CD, ‘Snapshot’ comes out next Monday and gets a four star review in today’s Guardian. Thanks
